Once clear epoxy resin hardens, it is virtually waterproof. When clear epoxy resin is applied to a surface, whether a tabletop, watercraft, or floor, it creates a waterproofed layer of protection that is extremely adhesive. It can bind to a variety of surfaces, such as wood, metal, plastic, or concrete, and once it hardens, it can resist water, abrasive chemicals, gasoline, and other liquids.
AeroMarine offers three color options when it comes to our epoxy resins, including grey, white, and black. If you’re looking for a different color that’s needed for creating DIY projects such as waterfall tables, you should consider creating your own colored epoxy.
To color clear epoxy, add the epoxy colorant to epoxy resin before mixing the epoxy resin and hardener together. If you have a clear epoxy floor coating, you can also sprinkle color flakes over the first layer of epoxy flooring before adding the second layer. If you’re creating a colorful table, you can add powdered pigments like watercolor paint or chalk, or liquid pigments like alcohol ink to the epoxy resin. Powdered pigments will create a more speckled look, while liquid pigments will create a more refined and smooth look.
Whether you’ve made a wooden game board or constructed an epoxy bar top, you may need to sand down certain areas to get rid of excess epoxy or smooth out any scratches. When you finish sanding, you may be left with an epoxy finish that is no longer clear. To make epoxy clear after sanding, use a plastic polish. With a plastic polish, apply with a soft cloth, follow the directions and polish your epoxy piece. Your epoxy piece should be crystal clear! Adding another thin coat of epoxy will also fill in all the scratches to leave you with a glossy finish.
Yes, clear epoxy can yellow. Epoxy is not UV resistant. If it is exposed to sunlight, epoxy will turn yellow. Make sure any epoxy table, craft, or creation is in an area that isn’t exposed to direct sunlight. You can protect your clear epoxy piece with UV resistant spar varnish.
Epoxy has so many uses, you may not know where to begin. From using clear epoxy for pebble paving or laminating automotive carbon fiber pieces, the options are truly endless. Take a look at some popular ways you can use epoxy:
