Epoxy Floor Resin FAQs:
What is epoxy flooring?
Epoxy flooring provides a smooth, glossy finish that coats the surface of hardwood, concrete, and bamboo floors. Epoxy floor resin is extremely resistant to water, heat, and pressure, which makes it great for a variety of surfaces. You can purchase garage floor epoxy that will withstand the weight of cars, foot traffic, and temperature changes. An epoxy basement floor will create a durable surface perfect for an at-home workshop.
Epoxy resins are composed of polymers and prepolymers that create strong, adhesive bonds that are resistant to chemicals, water and moderate heat, which is what makes them the perfect solution for creating durable floors.
How much does epoxy flooring cost?
Epoxy flooring costs are dependent on a variety of factors such as color, labor costs, and the type of solution being used. Doing the work yourself will always be cheaper. Using a clear epoxy as the base coat and a colored epoxy for the second coat will also save you money.
How much epoxy resin do I need to cover my floors?
The amount of epoxy resin you need to cover your floors depends on the total surface area of your floors and your desired thickness of the epoxy resin layer. We get it, math isn’t for everyone, which is why you can use our epoxy resin area calculator to get a rough estimate of how much epoxy resin you need for your floors. For a more accurate estimate for your epoxy flooring, it’s best to contact us for specifications and for help with calculations at (888) 680-6861.
How do I apply epoxy flooring?
Epoxy flooring is a common finish for most types of flooring due to its adhesive and durable properties. Luckily, you don’t need to be a professional to epoxy your own floors. If you’re looking to lay epoxy floor resin coating by yourself, or with the help of a friend, follow these steps:
- Clean the surface of your floors by sweeping away debris and using degreasers to remove grease and oil stains.
- If you’re placing down garage floor epoxy or creating an epoxy basement floor, check moisture levels by taping a square foot piece of plastic on the floor and letting it sit for 24 hours. After 24 hours, check to see if there is any condensation to determine if your floors have moisture. Concrete is porous, and moisture can cause the epoxy to not bind, so if your floors have moisture, you will need a enlist professional to find a vapor barrier solution.
- Because epoxy is thermosetting, it is sensitive to temperatures. Temperatures that are too cold can cause your epoxy to not cure. It’s best to epoxy floors when the temperature is at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the temperature of your flooring as well as concrete and tile can hold the cold even if the ambient room temperature is 65F.
- Etch concrete floors with an etching solution such as muriatic acid. This will allow the epoxy to bond with the concrete flooring.
- If there are any cracks in your concrete floors, patch the cracks with a concrete floor patching kit. If you don’t, the cracks will absorb epoxy causing your measurements to be thrown off.
- Assemble your epoxy floor resin solution by following the directions provided on the kit. Begin by filling a container with epoxy resin, and filling a second container with half as much epoxy hardener. Pour the two cups together into a new container and begin stirring with a wooden mixing stick. Once mixed, pour the epoxy solution into another container and mix one last time for about a minute.
- Use a medium nap or foam roller and begin coating the entire floor. Epoxy hardens quickly, so make sure you work diligently and finish within the half hour work life once the epoxy solution is created. You can section off the floor with painters tape and do one section at a time if you are working on a large lot.
- Once your first epoxy layer has cured, apply your second layer. Repeat the previous steps mentioned above.
- If you want to add some color or personality to your floors, broadcast color flakes onto your floors while the last layer of epoxy is still wet.
How do I clean epoxy floors?
Epoxy flooring is easy to clean because it’s smooth and durable. To clean your epoxy floor resin, begin by using a broom or vacuum to clean up any debris. Once all debris is removed, use warm water or an environment friendly mixture and clean any stains or spills with a mop. Minerals in hard water can cause epoxy to become hazy over time. If you notice this happening, you may want to refresh your flooring with a new coat of epoxy.
