What is cold cast resin?

Cold cast resin is a cast that’s made by mixing casting resin with a metal powder. You can use cold-casting to make an object appear as if it’s made from solid metal, or you can give an object a metallic finish. Creating casts from molten metal is expensive and can be hazardous, but cold-casting is affordable and can be done from the comfort of your own home.

AeroMarine offers bronze powder that can be cold-cast to polyurethane casting resin. By adding our bronze power to your resin cast, you can add real bronze to any object.

Is cold cast resin breakable?

Although cold cast resin can give the appearance of strong metal construction, it’s not actually as strong as metal that’s molten-crafted. Expect your cold cast to be as tough as the casting resin used to create your product.

The great thing about AeroMarine casting resin is that it’s strong and durable in its own right. This is a very tough casting material perfect for hardware parts, prototypes and small run production pieces. Your resin-cast product is suitable for much more than decorative use thanks to the inherent strength our resin provides.

How do you mix cold casting resin with metal powders?

Mix casting resins Part A and Part B with your bronze metal powder. You should mix 1-part bronze powder to 2-parts Urethane casting resin.

Spray your mold with the urethane mold release and let it sit a few minutes for the air bubbles to evaporate. This will help extend the life of the mold and will allow for an easier release for the cast. Apply the bronze powder to the inside of the mold and use a small paint brush to ensure the interior is thoroughly coated. Mix your urethane resin in a clean, plastic container. Then, pour the urethane resin into a second container and mix it once more. Pour the urethane resin into a silicone mold. Wait until the casting resin hardens before you remove it—while standard casting resin takes about 30 minutes to harden, it may take a little longer when it’s mixed with metal powder.
